LAHORE, July 28, 2025 – As the scorching summer continues to grip parts of Punjab, the provincial education department has announced revised operational hours for schools and colleges across both public and private sectors. The new academic calendar is set to resume on Thursday, August 15, 2025, following the conclusion of the scheduled summer break.
However, growing concern among parents and school administrators about the ongoing heatwave has raised questions about whether the reopening might be postponed. A final decision is expected shortly, with authorities citing that any change in schedule will depend on real-time meteorological assessments and temperature forecasts.
Current Academic Reopening Plans
According to a notification first issued in May 2025—and reaffirmed this week—academic activities will resume on August 15. But with that date falling on a Thursday, and the weekend immediately following, school attendance is likely to remain minimal on the reopening day. Full attendance and regular classroom operations are anticipated from Monday, August 18, unless a new advisory is issued.
Officials from the Punjab School Education Department (SED) have stated that they are actively monitoring the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s daily weather reports, especially in regions where daytime temperatures are consistently crossing 42°C (107.6°F).
Updated School Timings Across Punjab
To counteract the health risks posed by extreme heat, the following adjusted school hours will be implemented:
Single-Shift Schools
- Monday to Thursday: 7:30 AM – 1:00 PM
- Friday: 7:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Double-Shift Schools
Morning Shift:
- Monday to Thursday: 7:30 AM – 1:00 PM
- Friday: 7:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Evening Shift:
- Monday to Thursday: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM
- Friday: 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM
These revised hours aim to protect both students and teaching staff from the harmful effects of midday heat. Additionally, schools have been instructed to ensure adequate water supply, shaded areas, and ventilation systems where possible.
Possible Extension of Summer Holidays?
While the current official stance supports reopening on August 15, several education unions and parent associations have petitioned the government to consider extending the vacation period by at least another week, especially for primary and pre-primary students. The government has yet to issue a definitive ruling but has assured the public that any decision will prioritize student health and safety.
The Punjab Health Department has also issued precautionary guidelines for schools, urging limited outdoor activities and enhanced first-aid readiness during school hours.
